I would like to introduce myself; my name is Fiona Patrick and as of March 10, 2006, was hired as the Program Director for Parent to Parent of Pennsylvania program. In my past life (BC- Before Children) I was employed as a Medical Technologist for 10 years at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. The Parent to Parent of Pennsylvania program was kicked off by Governor Ridge in 1996 and since that time I have worked in all capacities within the program. I was the South Central Regional Coordinator for seven years, Eastern Regional Supervisor for three years and now with the Leadership team can continue to move the program forward in the coming years. One- to- one support is what originally drew me to the mission of P2P of PA, which is linking families of children and adults with disabilities and special needs together with a Peer Supporter [mentor]for purposes of support and information. I experienced this concept personally when my second child, Megan, was born with the diagnosis of Spina Bifida. After her delivery, the nurses offered to contact a family who also had a daughter born with Spina Bifida. The support family brought their daughter to meet me at the hospital and from that initial meeting I felt less isolated. I knew I could handle whatever came our way because I could speak to someone who truly understood our situation. A year later, I offered to support a new mom whose daughter was born with the same diagnosis and almost 3 decades later we are still great friends and so are our daughters. In fact, in the summer of 2013, my daughter was the Maid of Honor as the baby that I initially help to support got married! Both girls rolled down the aisle together. Being supported and then offering support, when you feel ready, is what makes our program continue to flourish. My daughter who was nine years old when I started with the program has now graduated from Susquehanna University as a Biology Major and is employed at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. I believe so deeply in this program and will always be available in some capacity to offer support. Sincerely, Fiona Patrick
